Making Some X-mas Cards With My Mum

I had a completely scrappy weekend! On Saturday I met my friend Andrea at an art supplies shop to buy some pretty papery goodies, and then we spent almost 9 hours in complete frenzy scrapping a wedding album for her sister. And we finished it! And made it look awesome! It’s just something about adding all the photos into a context and a complete story that makes them just a little bit more amazing to look at.

Sunday I spent with my dear mom, making Christmas cards. It was ages since we did something together just her and me, so I felt really grateful we had the chance to schedule that day in. She made so many pretty cards, I just had to sneak some photos of them and share. We have completely different styles, so it’s always surprising and fun to see how she’s gonna end up using her supplies!

We ended the weekend with a nice dinner, my mum, dad, Jed and I, shared a bottle of wine, talked about crafty things. I’m lucky to have a family that indulge me, they let me go on and on about my ideas and plans. I feel like I talked their ears off. Maybe I should get out of my crafty corner more….

A Tricky Challenge – Dotty Madness Scrapbook Layout

The Swedish webzine “Allt om Scrap” publishes an inspiration issue every Sunday, and last Sunday they posted some layouts from a challenge they did. I didn’t have time to do it last weekend, but I thought it sounded like a lot of fun, so I took some time yesterday to do it, since it really did feel like a challenge. Listen to this:

  • May only contain patterned papers. Must use acrylic paints and 4 different stamps. Have to have one type of overlay and at least 3 tags. And finally, it must have sewing machine stitches.
  • Can not include flowers, ribbons or lace. No corrugated cardboard allowed, and may not contain anything white!

Well… Only patterned papers and nothing white? Hello? I haven’t really done a traditional, full-size scrapbook layout before, so why not start with something difficult? Go big, that sort of thing. I got the perfect idea and I wanted Tricks in it, so this is what happened:

Yes, we like our dots ;) I really had bite my tongue plenty of times, not to reach for plain one-coloured papers, keeping the white details out, not using any string. In the end I’m pleased with the result, I wouldn’t have thought of this idea if it hadn’t been for the specifications in this challenge. Thank you, Tricks, for doing the photo shoot with me! You look really beautiful in that dotty dress!

A challenge in turquoise

www.scraplagret.se, a great Swedish web shop, has a fun challenge every month. The October challenge was to create a  layout, a card, something altered or whatever seemed fun, in a christmas theme, but in non-traditional christmas colours. The deal was to use pink, turquoise or/and purple. Now, what I really like about challenges, especially ones like these, is that it makes you think outside your own tiny, little box. Would I have made a christmas card in turquoise if not for this challenge? Probably not. I would probably have stuck to gren, red and gold. So there you go, challenges are fun. I will have to do more!

And this is the card! Keep your fingers crossed:

Time to get into that christmas spirit, peeps! 70 days left to find those pressies to your loved ones! Woo!

Super Light

When I started out, two years ago now, there were so many products I thought I’d never use.  And I never thought I’d be so into making my own embellishments either. But now, a few years later, here I am, spending precious time trying out things that often does not end up the way I thought it would (more often than not it requires a few tries). This is one of those projects, making my own buttons.

When I begun this hobby I never thought I’d ever put anything remotely like a button on a project. It just didn’t make any sense to me. More embellishments are always useful though, and I can’t keep putting blingy gems on everything I make (I would gladly do it but I need some variety I guess). So here I am, makin’ ma’ own buttn’s!

I’ve been itching to try to make my own embellishments with clay for a while now. I’ve read a few articles on paper clay, a super light material made of tiny paper granules (granules, not just in toothpaste!), that sounded perfect. Not to heave for a card you’d like to send yonder. Then I stumbled onto Craftpudding’s cutsey clay ornaments and decided I needed to give it a go, or else it would be buzzing around in my head for a long time (the What If’s of scrapping, keeping me awake).

The result is not at all what I thought it would be and I can’t say that I am all that pleased, but it is my first try, so maybe next time? Plenty of clay left! Maybe on the right project they will look rather nice. Here’s what happened:

I made some different shapes with the paper clay and used some tiny ornament stamps I have to impress a shape in them. They dry fairly quickly but i let them set over night.

I painted them in various pastel colours from a set of paints called “Shabby Chic” from Panduro. Perfect set if one wants a certain colour scheme but does not feel like mixing them oneself  ;)

I dabbed some gold coloured paint on them whit a foam brush to give them a kitschy look. I then added some colour to the imprints and finished up by coating them with some varnish:

Tadaa, handmade buttons! I will definitely give it another go, it was plenty of fun and, well, they need some improvement ;)
