What do you collect?

The prompt for day 5 in the creative diary was a bit of a problem for me: “Do you collect something? Make something with your collection or borrow someone else’s”.

Now: Who doesn’t collect something? And what counts as a collection? Do you collect cutlery just because you have a full set for a dinner placing? Does my books count? I have surrounded myself with large amount of books my entire life, it’s just a habit really, not a concious act of collecting them. They just… accumulate. What’s the difference between collection and accumulation? Is my box of My Little Ponies in the basement a collection? They are a large number, I won’t give them up but I am not actively getting MORE of them.

Having a collection was not the problem. I have a collection of video games,of books, stamps, pens (used to have bucket loads of different pens), wine glasses, recipes, photos, underwear, accessories, notebooks…

My problem is my habit of organizing my stuff. So, as I went about to try and do this prompt I started sorting boxes. And throwing stuff away. And moving stuff around. Which is great, but not so creative. It’s a sad thing that sorting pens or paints or the likes makes me relaxed and happy, but that’s the way it is.

At least I ended up finally re-organizing my stamps, the rubber ones with a cling mount and the acrylic ones. My old storage system used to take up a lot of space, and was a pain to take with me anywhere. Now it’s way more efficient and take hardly any space at all!

Clearly an unexpected side effect from this project…

So, any way, in the end I decided to do something with my recipe collection, and to make it simple I just added to it. I haven’t done that in a LONG while, so it felt good to finally get around to it, and not only keep a bunch of printed recipes I like in a pile.

The Scrapped Recipe Album is a thing I started many years ago, just as I discovered scrapbooking as a hobby. It was something me and my mum did together, since we both share a great love for cooking. Some recipes are almost like photos, a very clear memory. In this album I keep ordinary as well as special recipes, but only the ones I love the most, and they always have a story or memory connected to them.

This time I scrapped a recipe of how to make blinis (tiny Russian pancakes), something I made for the first time this new years eve. It was mine and Jed’s first new years in our new home, and of the 3-course dinner we scraped together this dish was the tastiest, at least in my opinion. Although I think Jed like the white chocolate panna cotta more *s*.

I left a small space for a photo, to add later. Some serving ideas are hidden under the little tag.

So, anyways, that was my Day 5 for Create 365. I hope to get some time to sort out some more recipes soon, I miss it! Over and out!

Hand-painted Baubles on Christmas Cards

Handmade decos are always a nice touch to a card or a scrapbook layout, I think. It just feels great to be able to make something from scratch from the supplies you have, and it gets a little more personal, which is what I always want with my Christmas cards. Sometimes a Christmas card is only thing you send someone that year, maybe to a friend or a loved one that lives far away and you’ve haven’t had a chance to see or talk to in a while. That’s why it feels important to me; I want the recipient to know I’m thinking about them.

So here are some of the Christmas cards I made this year. I decided to hand paint some baubles with watercolour. I really can’t paint at all, but this technique is fairly easy: Draw a circle on some watercolour paper, dampen the circle with water, then add colour, a little bit at a time.Make it a bit darker around the edges and leave a little spot where you don’t put any colour at all, which makes it look a bit shiny.

When deciding on size, I punched out a circle with one of my punches and used that as a template. That made it easy to punch out the baubles perfectly circular after I’d painted them. Also, I used some of my small snowflake- and heart stamps to make a decorative pattern. I stamped the pattern in water resistant ink before I added the watercolour. Lastly I sprayed the baubles with some shimmer mist. To make the card a little dimensional I adhered the baubles with some foam dots.

I was really pleased with these cards, I wanted to make more like them, but I went on to other ideas, more posts to come!

Stay safe, everyone. :)

Making Some X-mas Cards With My Mum

I had a completely scrappy weekend! On Saturday I met my friend Andrea at an art supplies shop to buy some pretty papery goodies, and then we spent almost 9 hours in complete frenzy scrapping a wedding album for her sister. And we finished it! And made it look awesome! It’s just something about adding all the photos into a context and a complete story that makes them just a little bit more amazing to look at.

Sunday I spent with my dear mom, making Christmas cards. It was ages since we did something together just her and me, so I felt really grateful we had the chance to schedule that day in. She made so many pretty cards, I just had to sneak some photos of them and share. We have completely different styles, so it’s always surprising and fun to see how she’s gonna end up using her supplies!

We ended the weekend with a nice dinner, my mum, dad, Jed and I, shared a bottle of wine, talked about crafty things. I’m lucky to have a family that indulge me, they let me go on and on about my ideas and plans. I feel like I talked their ears off. Maybe I should get out of my crafty corner more….

Photos that makes you remember

It doesn’t have to be the most fantastic photo that makes you remember, and it doesn’t have to be from the most special occasion. Of course even the every day things can be just as memorable as the big events.

Going through my photo stash I came upon this photograph; it is ten years old, a friend of mine took it, and it’s a photo of me in my early twenties. What struck me about this picture were two things: It was a picture of me just being myself, and it was a photo of me in my first apartment.

Seeing it made me remember a thousand things in a matter of seconds. It reminded me of what I used to wear, of my favourite necklace, of my nose piercing, of my first SLR. It reminded me of moving away from home, of my small one-room studio and all my favourite things in it.

I lived for almost eight years in that small place and a lot of things happened there. It was a place where I wrote stories and made up new recipes, and a place to invite my friends to.

So that is what I wrote in my journalling:

I couldn’t find a paper I thought went with the photo and the sentiment, so I painted this pattern by hand on a piece of recycled paper. There are some better photos of the details in my last post. I also embossed the clock and filled in some of the details with some acrylic paints.

Overall it feels great to have gotten this photo out of the dusty box it used to be in. I sort of represent that whole time in my life. Yes, this layout took quite some time to finish, but it was a happy project to complete.

Stay safe, everyone!

Make your own kind of pattern (even if nobody else sings along)

I started on a new 12×12 layout the other night, and I sat for quite some time going through my stash trying to fins something I thought went with the photo. I couldn’t find one.

The photo is one of myself, about10-11 years ago. A good friend took that photo of me, sadly though we lost touch many years ago. I think that photo of me is one of the few from that time I really like. I was in my early 20′s, an sure, when one is young and pretty (harr harr) of course there are a couple of nice looking pics of you, but at that age it’s not often one poses on a picture as oneself. This photo though, is just me in my messy room in my first apartment, holding a camera. The colours are sort of murky (so was my apartment) and there’s a lot of clutter (MY clutter) and I look rather scruffy. But it’s me, at that time.

I felt that none of my patterned paper really matched. So I started to paint one of my own, on a piece of 12×12 recycled, unbleached paper. I’m not quite done with the layout yet, but thought I’d show a few pictures. Hope to share the whole thing with you soon!

Stay safe and thanks for stopping by!

When Boyfriends Craft

My boo is a very crafty and creative person, I don’t think a day has gone by when he hasn’t had a good idea. He’s just an inspiring person to be around! He is the kind of person you can explain an idea too, he’ll understand it and show an interest and then give you good feedback or more ideas. Among other things he is great with graphics, he is a great photographer, and the other day he built new shelves in all my wardrobes from scratch! So there you go, could I be boasting more? ;)

Well, the other day he said: “It’s my mum’s birthday soon, maybe we should make her a card?”. And we did! Or, HE did, I was just the assistant, really. He explained what he wanted to do and I provided means to do it. He highlighted the pattern on the paper with copper embossing powder, and added some skeleton leafs to make it more autumnal. This is the result:

I’m a proud girlfriend!
